Novelty Gifts

Back in 1987, a very small retail space became available on 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Believing that the small location had potential, Harriet Compas rented the space, and named it Classic Impressions. Utilizing her background in art and design, along with her previous retail experience, she made the best of it. Since space was so limited, she began by selling cards, wrap, t-shirts, and small gifts, most of which were licensed items.

Only having been in business for one year, it was evident that Classic Impressions was on to something. Harriet knew she could do well, if only she had more space to work with. It was at this time the location next to Classic Impressions became vacant. Jumping on the opportunity, Harriet knocked down the wall connecting the two stores. Now with more space available, it was time to define Classic Impressions as a true specialty store, similar to the one that still exists today. Harriet was now able to introduce new categories into the store, including toiletries, potpourri, candles, gourmet food, unique gift items, and party goods.

With an opportunity to continue to grow, Classic Impressions relocated in 1994 to a new location. Only being 4 blocks from the original location and still on 3rd Avenue, our customers followed. At the same time, new customers discovered how truly unique Classic Impressions was.

Soon after, in 1996, Classic Impressions was ready to introduce itself to a new neighborhood. In that year, a second location was opened on Court Street in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Making minor changes in what products would be carried, Classic Impressions was quickly welcomed in downtown Brooklyn.

Following the introduction of Classic Impressions to Cobble Hill, a third location opened in lower Manhattan. With a Manhattan address, Classic Impressions began to specialize in gift baskets, having acquired corporate customers. Unfortunately, due to 9/11 and the effects it had on local businesses, Classic Impressions was forced to close it’s Manhattan location. Then, in 2004, Classic Impressions crossed the Verrazano and opened on Richmond Road in Staten Island.
